Korean Immigrants
About the Project
This broadsheet is part of an ongoing series examining Korean immigration and diasporic identity. Using digital collage, it blends found cityscape images of Seoul and New York with hand-drawn illustrations and calligraphy to evoke the layered emotional realities of migration.
A monochrome U.S. skyline, accented with subtle blue highlights, conveys the emotional hardship and alienation often accompanying the immigrant experience. Floating above, digitally illustrated rainclouds release hand-drawn drops, while a Photoshopped airplane cuts across the night sky—its vapor trail seamlessly transforming into the word “Immigration”in calligraphy.
At the bottom of the composition, a hand-drawn sign reading “U.S.” sits beside a haunting, sketch-like figure inspired by the Statue of Liberty—torch raised, eyes wide—surrounded by disembodied hands and arrows pointing forward. This dreamlike imagery channels both the longing and uncertainty of arrival.
Through its surreal layering of place, text, and symbol, the piece transforms statistical narratives of migration into something more intimate—poetic, fragile, and deeply human.
